Our Verdict
While the Super Badass lives up to its moniker with violent distortion and forceful overdrive, it’s the strong EQ that elevates this pedal to the level of badass. Many of us have blind-ordered a distortion or overdrive only to discover that it is completely incompatible with our rig or has a limited range of application. The EQ of the Badass, on the other hand, makes the pedal completely at home with single-coils or humbuckers, high-gain amps or good quality amps, metal leads or roots-rock grit.
The MXR’s voice has a modern color to it that may turn off some old-school fans, but if you need a new gain pedal that covers all the bases, it’s worth giving the Super Badass a shot—chances are, you’ll easily find a beneficial and inspiring flavor of growl and have enough room left to explore overdrive and distortion realms you had not really considered. And you’d be hard-pressed to find greater distortion flavors for the money for less than $100.
