Our Verdict
There’s an ever-expanding selection of strange and fascinating E-HX pedals available these days, but be sure to check this one out. Some E-HX units have a well-deserved reputation for being over-the-top sound producers, but more subtle tones are also achievable.
That’s definitely true in this case: if you set the rate at 10 o’clock with a light depth, any clean tone will benefit. The deeper depth setting is more reminiscent of Andy Summers and classic Alex Lifeson, with enough warm vintage shimmer on tap.
We faithfully replicated the iconic Come As You Are modulation, with the rate set around 12 o’clock and a hefty depth – increasing the pace only adds to the Soundgarden-style flow without getting too out of hand. It’s as similar to the original Small Clone as it gets and, best of all, it should fit snugly onto your existing pedalboard.
